OVERVIEW
General information
Travel deep into Iceland’s remote highlands to Mælifell, one of the country’s most striking volcanoes. Rising bright green from the black sands of Mælifellssandur, this moss-covered cone sits in the middle of a vast volcanic desert shaped by eruptions, glacial floods, and centuries of wind.
Leaving Reykjavik, the journey heads south before turning inland onto rough highland tracks accessible only by Super Jeep. The drive itself is part of the experience: crossing glacial rivers, navigating lava fields, and traveling through wide, empty landscapes where there are often no other people for miles.
Along the way there are regular photo stops at dramatic viewpoints, canyons, and river crossings. Near Mælifell we explore the area on foot, taking time to photograph the volcano from different angles and experience the scale and silence of the highlands.
Midday we stop at a remote highland lake for a relaxed lunch surrounded by volcanic mountains and black sand plains. On clear days the views stretch across glaciers, ridges, and endless highland valleys.
This tour focuses on the journey as much as the destination: wild terrain, remote tracks, river crossings, and some of the most untouched landscapes in Iceland. It’s a full day deep into the interior, far from the main roads and crowds.
